1974 Dunhill Red Bark #817-5391 *SOLD 12/1/23*

$185.00

Back to the Hungarian shape for another desirable pipe, the old Red Bark. How did Dunhill get to the Red Bark shade? I’ve no idea, but I’ve a wild guess. As Dunhill devotees know, the undercoat for the black colored Shell finish is red; there reddish undertones to the Shell. Well, maybe one day they forgetfully ran out of black stain (could happen, right?) and rather than suspend production for a full day or so, one bright worker came up with the idea of using that red undercoat as the outside color. But on reflection, that wouldn’t work, because they would need a “Red Bark” stamp, and that wouldn’t have been on hand. Another of my cockamamie ideas shot down. This pipe is in very good condition; the rim is free of any wear due to burn and the stem is mark-free, the nomenclature is fully intact and the draw is open. It’s stamped Grp. 4, but Hungarians seem to come in larger than other shapes.
3.95” long, bowl 2.15” tall. Weight: 2 1/8 oz., 62 grams.
