Bewlay "Olde 49"#21724-6862 *SOLD*

$50.00

Bewlay has always been a mystery to me, even after reading about it on Pipedia. What I now think is correct is that the company that owned (or still owns) the name is a retail concern and purchased their Bewlay named pipes from various, high end English pipe companies. Thus, depending on the grade, they were considered one of the old, classic, desirable English brands. I’ve certainly considered them to be in the same category of the Comoy’s’
Sasienis, BBBs, Barlings, etc. Which brings us to your concern, the pipe in front of you (and in front of me as I type this). In sum, it’s a Grp. 5 Billiard in very good condition. The nomenclature is a little buffed down, but every letter is legible. But who made it? From what I can unearth, the 156 shape is from Loewe. In the reading I’ve done, it’s mostly the Loewe “Popular” as I understand it. This pipe, as described above, is the “Olde 49.” Regardless, it’s clearly an old English classic, with vulcanite stem that’s near-pristine, an open draw and a clean, uncharred chamber. Should be a very fine smoker. Used.
5.85” long, bowl 1.9” tall. Weight: 1 3/8 oz., 40 grams.
