This pipe must have been made in Upshall’s early days, when there was a plethora of great briar (appropriated from the recently deceased Charatan factory?) because from everything I can discern about this wood, it is definitely Upshall material, with tight straight grain all around the bowl. I like the plateau top, too. At this point in the old fellow’s life, it is no longer pristine. There are no real ‘indents’ in the stem, but rather a little “wave” on its bottom. I also note a little light between the stem and the shank. It’s not perfectly flush. It’s super close, though, and it can be fixed, but not by me. Grp. 6 size.
