Clearly an older Charatan. It does not have the Lane “L” and that is either because it was bought in Europe or, and I’m pretty sure this is the case, it is pre-Lane. The shape of the bowl, the button on the stem, the stamping of the nomenclature, all point to this being an older piece, made all the better by the pipe’s excellent condition. More than all of that, the shape has long been discontinued. There is no Squat Tomato in the Charatan shape charts I have. Interestingly, this does have a shape # on it…502, which is the Prince shape, but this is no Prince. I see European Charatans often enough (and for what it’s worth, this one did come in on consignment from Austria), but not older pieces. Snag this one if you can.
