1984 Dunhill Cumberland #72025-11944 *SOLD 7/24/25*

$125.00

A little bit of wear (actually, more carbon residue than actual wear) on the rim and a new replacement stem with dot, so in that respect, the pipe is compromised (although the pipe itself has no feelings of inferiority…much like mongrels who hardly think about the pedigree papers they don’t have). On the other hand, it does have the smooth rims that Cumberlands had until Dunhill decided to save about 50 cents per pipe by making the rim of Cumberlands sandblasted, too. Want a cute story about that? A very good customer of mine (I eventually assessed, upon his death, his pipe collection for his wife and insurance purposes. It came to, me being typically conservative, over $500,000) came into the shop to order 6 Cumberlands in shapes he did not yet have. I called Lane Ltd., Dunhill’s exclusive importer/distributor, but Lane did not have those shapes in stock. So I called the Dunhill product Mgr., a fine gentleman named Simon Glendenning, in London. We quickly and easily agreed to have those 6 shapes made, sent to Sherlock’s Haven directly and billed through Lane Ltd. No problem. Simon then explained that the Cumberland line no longer had the smooth rim. To me, that was one of the most attractive aspects of the line. “What fucking moron altered the looks of your best selling line?” I couldn’t keep myself from yelling into the phone. When about 3 seconds of silence ensued, I already new the answer. “Myself and Mr. Dunhill (Richard Dunhill) Simon finally responded. I think he was protecting Richard Dunhill and inserted his own name for that sake. But he agreed to have those 6 pipes made with the old smooth top. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure they went back to saving 50 cents a pipe.
The nomenclature here is crisp and clear.
