I don’t know if this is Stanwell’s pipe of the year, but I’m willing to go out on this limb based on the metal plaque on the shank that says “Stanwell” and “1984.” Unless they turned literary and intended to remind us of George Orwell’s great book of that same name (“1984”…he did not title a book “Stanwell.”) what other reason could there be but establishing this as their pipe of the year (POY)? It’s a large Grp. 4, or maybe a small Grp. 5. It’s in excellent condition. In 1984, Stanwell was firmly in Denmark, so you don’t have to worry about this coming from Italy.
